August 7--
A car exploded in the Bolueta area of Bilbo in the Basque province of Bizkaia killing four people allegedly linked to Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, local news reported. The car, apparently loaded with guns and explosives blew up and burned late Monday shortly before 11 p.m. as it approached an intersection. One of the victims was identified as Patxi Rementeria, one of the Basque refugees deported to Cape Verde by France in 1989 after the Spanish government broke an agreement with ETA that caused peace talks in Algeria to fail. Spanish police link Patxi Rementeria to ETA's Bizkaia Commando, which is blamed for several attacks on Spain's militarized Civil Guard. The four people killed were inside the moving car when it exploded and burst into flames, government officials said. Remains found at the scene were being examined in an attempt to identify the other three victims. The mayor of Bilbo, Iņaki Azkuna, a member of the moderate Basque Nationalist Party, said he was shocked by the scene of the explosion and called on political parties to overcome their differences and find a way forward toward peace.
